Who would have thought that I, of all people, would ever be climbing mountains!
After two years of work going from Beacon Rock to some of the most strenuous day
hikes in the Gorge, I am now mentally and physically ready to start getting serious.
Some of our more recent hikes have pointed out the need to acquire better/more
appropriate clothing and equipment. It's also become apparent that I need to punch
up my wilderness navigation abilities. And of course to get in better physical
condition, especially with regard to increasing my lung capacity. Hence the 3x
weekly visits to the gym and 10+ mile, 3k+ e.g. weekly hikes.

I'm really looking forward to this 7 week course!

March 13, 2012: Met the cast and crew of Team 3 tonight at the Lucky Labrador of all
places... (I HATE dogs, remember?)... I have to say that my expectations were that I
would probably find myself in a room full of Obama loving Bohemians who I would have
little in common with. Not terribly important since I am totally committed to
getting as much knowledge out of this course as possible.... liking the people I
am working with would be nice but it is not at all vital to me attaining my goals.

I have to say that I am honored and humbled to be accepted into a team that is being
led by such accomplished mountain climbers! It was mostly instructors at this first
meet and greet... the only person I met who was another student struck me as being a
putz but *ALL* of the instructors were first rate! I really liked several of them,
in particular, which is unusual for me since Eloise and I hate people. Doing a
volunteer stint as a BCEP instructor is a required part of the Mazama Intermediate
Climbing School (ICS) and all of those guys were great. One, in particular, I really
liked. These guys are in a whole different league than I am... unlikley they would
want me tagging along on one of their adventures. But I hope to at least approach
their level of knowledge, skill and conditioning by this time next year.

I'm pretty amped up about this course and I plan to keep my eyes and ears open and my
mouth shut as Mr Femulari advised me to the day I enlisted in the Military.



Who would have thunk it? I passed!!!!



And with a near perfect score to boot!
