Stop in Prairie City. Visit The John Day Fossil Beds
Stops at Shaniko and Grass Valley, Oregon
And then get home before the monsoons hit.

I was out Hells Canyon way in 2010.
And to the John Day Fossil Beds in 2010.
Heppner in 2012.
Hardman in 2012.



I had planned to do a ride based on a Hells Canyon loop but Forest Road 39 from
Halfway to Joseph is still closed due to a landslide several years ago. So... here's
Plan B



You'll need to manage your fuel on the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway (Forest Service
Roads 52 and 53). There is name brand premium gas in Heppner. Station open 7 days
a week. And premium gas in Sumpter, 75 miles away. No gas in between except for
Pacific Pride in Ukiah. A good rule of thumb for motorcycle touring in Eastern Oregon
is to never pass up a gas station, especially on Sundays or Holiday weekends.



The Daughter formerly known as Jessica Jeep and my Grandson Noah Brown who I will
probably never get to meet.

Jessica, who is my youngest, will be 38 in August. She was about Noah's age the last
time I saw her. Haven't heard from her since.... which was definitely not my idea.
I was younger than Jessica is now the last time I saw her. I wonder how she'd feel
if she never got to see young Noah ever again. What goes around, comes around, assuming
that there is justice in this World. You sure don't get the life you expected or hoped
to have..

PDX to Heppner
I-84 East, State Route 74 South - 210 miles

Heading out of town early Friday afternoon and staying over in Heppner. This will
allow more time for touring and picture taking. I've never been on the stretch of road
between Heppner and Sumpter so it should be an adventure.

We visited Heppner in 2012.

Prairie City to Madras - 180 miles

A couple of miles on a dusty, crowded, dirt/gravel road to get to the
John Day Fossil Beds Painted Hills Unit.
