This was a fairly strenuous hike up the Casey Creek trail and down the Nick
Eaton trail. There was a fair amount of snow (around 6") in the higher elevations.
At about 3,000' we saw some bear tracks... made by a BIG bear... much larger than
the bear tracks we saw up on Table Mountain last week.
Nice hike as far as burning calories and a good cardio workout goes.. but not much
scenery and only a few viewpoints along the way. Not much visual reward for the effort.
We (I) pushed it a little too much and we didn't make it back to the trailhead until
it was minutes away from pitch black darkness. Julie was upset but was a good sport
about it and didn't say a word. Just one of many reasons why she's a "keeper"...

The Casey Creek trail during the dead of Winter.... it's a Winter wonderland and
we were all alone (except for that bear)... the low hanging branches filled with snow
were annoying and slowed us down some but mostly it was a nice, peaceful hike.
Start out at the Herman Creek trailhead and follow trail 406 for about 4 miles.
Not long after entering the Mark O. Hatfield wilderness area, you'll turn left and
go up the Casey Creek trail. Continuing straight will take you to Mud Lake and
Tomlike Mountain. One of the creek crossings was somewhat difficult due to the
water level. Poles, high/waterproof boots and gaiters recommended.
When you get to the top of the Casey Creek trail, which is about 3 miles long,
turn left and go down the Nick Eaton trail #447. It's around 6 miles back to the
Herman Creek trailhead. We didn't dawdle (much) but this hike took up 8 full hours.
Not many good views on this hike but there were a few.
Just past the Nick Eaton cutoff you come across several magical falls which of course
made Julie happy.
We left the trailhead at 09:00 and returned back at 17:00, just as it was getting
very dark. These short daylight days will be going away now that we are on the other
side of the solstice.
I had a headlamp, several flashlights and lots of batteries so there were no worries.
Still, we prefer to be back in the car before nightfall.
