We were out this way
last year.
There's pictures of previous trips to Lava Canyon
HERE,
HERE and
HERE
Washington State Highway 14 East. Just past Stevenson, turn left onto Wind River
Road to carson. Bear right, staying on Wind River Road, just past the fish hatchery.
Turn left onto Forest Road 31 towards McClellan Viewpoint. Left at the stop sign
and left at the next stop sign onto Forest Road 25. About ten miles before Cougar
turn right at the sign for Ape Canyon and the Hikers Bivouac. Lava Canyon is at
the end of that road. Return and continue on FR 25 until it turns into SR 503 near
Cougar. SR 503 to I-5 at Woodland or make the left toward Amboy for a more scenic
route.
We had planned on going all the way to Lava Canyon but the last 8 miles of the road
was closed due to snow. Somewhat surprised since it's been warm the past week or so.
Hottest day of the year so far... high 80's.
A quick stop at the Cape Horn viewpoint overlooking the Columbia River looking East.
We saw very little snow on the road except for this section at the highest elevation
just before McClellan. The road to Windy Ridge was posted as closed as were all the
other forest roads. Still... figured it was looking good for getting to Lava Canyon.
Obligatory pictures of Mount St Helens at the McClellan viewpoint. Julie and I
will be doing the St. Helens summit climb to Monitor Ridge in August.
Julie packed us a nice picnic lunch. We found a nice shaded bench at the Lone Fir
campground to enjoy it while watching the traffic go by. There's a statue here of
Yogi Bear or Boo-boo or someone....
