Perhaps I'm getting old but it seems like every year there are noticeably less people
attending this event. Are people my age just dying off or is the population more
interested in BBQs these days?
While I am in very good health, at least as far as I know, for the past several years
I've been living a mostly "one day at a time" lifestyle. Who knows if we will get
another tomorrow so I generally try to get the most out of every day I spend above
ground. However, two hours once a year is a small amount to spend to honor Military
men and women who will forever be teenagers. While my life since the Military has
been far from wonderful, at least I got to live for another 45 years... a gift that
these KIA/MIAs never got to enjoy.
Memorial Day is as much about the living as it is about the dead. I often say that I
do things for my dead Veteran friends because they no longer can... but still, this
day is a good time to evaluate one's own priorities.
Taking stock of my life - 5/30/11
My core priorities
- Live a life that is true to myself
- Allow myself to be happier
- Live a life of no regrets
- Be fair in my dealings with others
- Value people of substance
- Don't depend on things or people that could be gone in a flash
- Distance myself from people who lack a moral or ethical compass
- Make time to smell the roses
- Pick my battles carefully
- Avoid doing anything incredibly stupid
- No fear
